Collioure Antique Suzani and Guatemalan Textile Clutch
Combining an antique suzani from Turkey with a handwoven textile from Guatemala, the Collioure clutch is proof that sustainable fashion can be absolutely STUNNING.
After designing upholstered chair-backs with an antique suzani, we were left with a few small pieces of the gorgeous embroidered textile. Believing as we do that every piece of a beautiful fabric can be put to use, we brought the suzani down to Guatemala and designed this clutch around it. And how perfect is the woven Guatemalan textile with it? We like to say that beautiful things happen when cultures collaborate, and what a perfect example this is!
"Suzani" is a term for embroidered textiles that originated hundreds of years ago in Central Asia. According to local custom, a suzani was started every time a girl was born. Each female family member would embroider a different panel of cloth with hand-spun silk. When the girl was of marrying age, all panels would be sewn together, and used as a dowry. With so many women participating in its creation, the suzani became a form of artistic expression and communication for women.
The legacy of the suzani has endured, yet evolved- while no longer used as dowry pieces, the exquisite textiles are still crafted as works of art. Each suzani available at Larkin Lane is a hand-embroidered, one of a kind piece to treasure.
At Larkin Lane, Lark hand selects authentic textiles and collaborates with artisans on the design of each product. Your purchase supports these craftsmen and women. Thank you for the role you play in keeping global textile traditions alive!
Guatemalan weavers are mainly women, who derive natural dyes for their threads from vegetables and minerals. They still use the Mayan back-strap loom along with traditional spinning and embroidery techniques.
