Handwoven in the highlands of Guatemala

The Evelyn Huipil is woven and embroidered by two artisans working in partnership: one weaves the cotton textile by hand on a backstrap loom, and a second artisan completes the embroidery — a division of craft that has long defined this region's tradition. From first thread to finished garment, the Evelyn takes at least 45 days to complete.

The huipil's construction is, at its foundation, a rectangle — but on the body, that simple geometry becomes a soft, considered drape. This isn't incidental. Traditionally, the huipil was designed to live with a woman through every stage of her life — loose enough to move with her through motherhood and the years beyond, a garment meant to adapt to the body rather than the other way around. It is traditionally belted at the waist and worn with a wraparound skirt.

Provenance

This piece comes from a weaving cooperative of women in the highlands of Guatemala who have practiced this craft for centuries, passing the tradition down from mother to daughter within their families. Larkin Lane has worked directly with these artisans for ten years.

How to Wear It

Belted at the waist as it's traditionally worn, or left loose over trousers, a skirt, or a dress the Evelyn is designed to move with you.

Product Details

  • Fabric: hand woven cotton, hand embroidered

  • Origin: northern highlands of Guatemala

  • Care instructions: Can be machine washed inside out on delicate; we suggest drying flat. The cotton textile can be ironed (suggested ironing inside out) and can also be dry cleaned.

  • Note: As each piece is entirely handmade by two artisans, slight variations in weave and embroidery are part of its character, not a flaw

Size & Fit

  • See sizing image for full fit details

  • The huipil's traditional rectangular cut is intentional — it's designed to drape and adjust to the body rather than fit it exactly, which is part of its history, not a sizing inconsistency

ABOUT THE ARTISAN
  • Guatemalan weavers are mainly women, who derive natural dyes for their threads from vegetables and minerals. They still use the Mayan back-strap loom along with traditional spinning and embroidery techniques.

SIZE GUIDE

Overall width: 40"

Overall length: 21"

Sleeve opening (laid flat): 7½" (15" circumference)

Fit Notes:

Relaxed fit, flattering drape.

Each huipil is measured laid flat. Because these garments are crafted from traditional rectangular textiles, they are designed to drape rather than fit closely. The silhouette adapts beautifully to many body shapes and stages of life.

Exact measurements may vary slightly (1/2" to 1") due to the handmade nature of each piece. If you have any questions and would like to confirm your fit at time of order, please email our team at info@larkinlane.com and we'd be happy to help you.
